SHOWMANSHIP RULES COMING SOON!

1. Show eligibility age is of January 1 of the current year. Exhibitors not older than 21 years of age as of January 1 of the current year are eligible to show. Anyone who has reached 22 years of age by January 1 is ineligible. Minimal age is 8 years old as of January 1 of the current year.

2. All animals must be owned and shown by the exhibitor.

3. If an exhibitor has two animals in the same class, a junior member must show the second animal.

4. All animals must have inter-state and in-state health papers to be allowed on the grounds and for show eligibility. All animals must meet Maryland Health regulation rules.

5. Exhibitors must have their own medical and accident insurance. The show management, the ABC Board of Directors and the Howard County Fair Association will not be responsible for accidents or any injuries to any person or animal or for loss or damage to personal property.

6. Show order: Heifer show begins at 9:00am; Steer Show follows at approximately 12:00pm. Heifer Show Order: All Breeds will show in alphabetical order followed by AOB and Crossbreds. Steer Show Order: All breeds will show in alphabetical order followed by AOB, Market Heifer, and Crossbreds. (If there are 4 or more animals of a breed, there will be a class added for that particular breed.)

7. Those animals eligible to compete for the top 5 heifers will include only breed champions and reserves and the crossbred champion and reserve.

8. Those animals eligible to compete for the top 5 steers or market animal will include the champion and reserve market heifer, breed champions and reserves, the top 5 crossbred steers, selected from the top 5 steers in each cross bred division, which will be out of the first and seconds from each class. Only the Crossbred champion will initially enter the ring for the overall champion competition.

9. All steers and heifers must have registration papers to show with their appropriate breed. All other animals will show in the crossbred heifer or steer division, and or market heifer division. Heifers are eligible to show in both the heifer and market heifer show with double entry fee to be paid.

10. Steers and Market Heifers will be shown by breed and weight. Pure bred registration papers and tattoos will be checked. Steers must be born after Jan. 1, 2011 and before August 31, 2011.

11. Registered heifers will be shown by breed and date of birth, crossbred and market heifers by weight. Heifers must be born after September 1, 2010 and before December 31, 2011. Registration papers and tattoos will be checked.

12. Entry fees of $35 per head must accompany official entry blanks, due by June 1, 2012. After June 9, 2012, entry fee is $45 per head and no heifer substitution is allowed.

13. Animals may arrive at the Howard County Fairgrounds after 4pm Friday June 8th and not later than 8am June 9th.

14. Barn space is limited; please do not reserve more barn space than you need. All animals MUST be housed in the barn; NO animals can be tied outside, per Howard County Fair management.

15. Steers will be weighed on Saturday from 7am to 8:30am.

16. Straw and or shavings only for bedding. Exhibitors must clean up their area and take their bedding and manure with them when departing the fairgrounds. One hour after the show, stalls should be clean.

17. The ABC jackpot show follows the Animal Code of Ethics.

18. No false hair, twining or pumping.

19. No alcoholic beverages on the fairgrounds.

20. Good sportsmanship, full cooperation, and positive relationship are due at all times from exhibitors, parents and show personnel.

Requirements for Exhibitors
The Maryland Department of Agriculture, Animal Health Section requires exhibitors of livestock to follow regulations set forth by the Secretary of Agriculture and the State Veterinarian to safeguard against the spread of infectious and contagious disease of livestock during a fair or show (COMAR 15.11.14).

Livestock Exhibitors:
Health Requirements for Livestock Exhibited in Maryland

  1. All Maryland livestock for exhibition, except equine, rabbits and poultry, must be inspected by an accredited veterinarian within 60 days of the first exhibition.  It is the veterinarian’s responsibility to have knowledge of the current animal health requirements prior to inspection of animals and completion of the current MDA Intrastate Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) form.  It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to have the completed CVI form approved and stamped by the regional MDA Animal Health Offices prior to the date of first exhibition.  The form must include the date of first event to be attended.  The MDA CVI is valid only for the current show season.  The CVI can be obtained at any of the regional MDA Animal Health Offices or download by clicking on the link below.
    Certification of Veterinary Inspection and the Self Certification forms
  2. All out-of-state livestock except equine, rabbits and poultry, for exhibition in Maryland shall meet MDA Animal Health import requirements for the appropriate species and any additional Maryland exhibition requirements. Obtain an interstate CVI from an accredited veterinarian. The interstate CVI is valid for 30 days from the date of inspection.

  4. All livestock exhibitors must fill out a Self-Certification form prior to loading animals and present it upon request to the designated fair or show representative at each show attended.  This form shall be filled out by the owner/caretaker of the animals after completion of inspection and prior to loading of animals.  This form is located on the back of the CVI for livestock exhibitors and/or downloaded by clicking on the link above.
Exhibitors must adhere to the MDA Animal Health Rejection Policy.
